IASTM stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. Most often, clinician’s utilize a metal bar for this technique. Some brands are much more aggressive and leave the patient more bruised after treatment than others. At Daigle’s Osteopractic Physical Therapy, the F.R.A.M.S tools are used. This acronym stands for Fibrosis Release And Myofascial Stretching. These metal bars have a smooth rounded edge rather than a wedge. One of the main purposes for IASTM is to use friction to increase tissue temperature above 104 deg Fahrenheit. This allows the hyaluronic acid to reduce its cross-linkages and improve tissue mobility and cellular organization.
